(The foreshadowing is also amplified by the way the plot is laid out: the description of Tsukuru having the dream is right after a scene where Sara refuses to sleep with Tsukuru, even though chronologically the dream happened sixteen years prior.) It also foreshadows later in the book when Tsukuru suspects that Sara is sleeping with another man. This is his first experience of jealousy, and the moment that he stops wanting to die. Also, she was asexual.Įarly in the novel, Tsukuru has a dream of a woman whose body was separate from her heart, and Tsukuru could only have one (her body or her heart). The watch has to be wound every three days or the mechanism stops working.Īfter she was raped and had a miscarriage, Shiro became bulimic because she didn't want to menstruate. He was also probably the last one to have seen Shiro before she died (six months before, actually), because he was the only one who visited her in Hamamatsu. (This was after his experience with Haida, whether or not that was real. Also, the main reason Tsukuru wanted to have sex was to prove to himself that he wasn't gay.

This is important, because sexual repression is a big theme of the book. Maybe I just have poor retention, but see how many of these things you remember: Despite its short length there's actually a bunch of stuff packed into this book.
